In this paper we present the joined phylogeography of the calanoid copepod Calanus helgolandicus (Claus 1863) from the North East (NE) Atlantic and the Adriatic Sea and the closely related C. euxinus (Hulsemann 1991) from the Black Sea based on sequences of a mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase subunit I (COI) fragment.
Calanus helgolandicus has the most southern distribution range of the Calanus species present in the North Atlantic/Arctic, with its core distribution located in the North Sea ( Barnard et al., 2004 ). This distribution is based on morphology, with the presence reported up to 63°N ( Barnard et al., 2004 ).
We review current knowledge and understanding of the biology and ecology of the calanoid copepod Calanus helgolandicus in European waters, as well as provide a collaborative synthesis of data from 18 laboratories and 26 sampling stations in areas distributed from the northern North Sea to the Aegean and Levantine Seas.
However, species determination by morphology is difficult for C. helgolandicus ( Lindeque et al., 2004 ); further, the use of the fifth pair of swimming legs for identification has been proven unreliable for other Calanus species ( Choquet et al., 2018) and might need re-evaluation for C. helgolandicus.
